Travel like a local in Sri Lanka

Boom!The First adventure in 2019!

We booked our tickets to the gem of Asia __ Sri Lanka __

Four weeks driving around with a TukTuk !

Here's how we planned our trip _

003-verification-sign-sketchBooked our tickets and got ETA SriLanka Visa

Apparently this is easy and essential first step to begin your journey, Duh!

003-verification-sign-sketchReserved a TUKTUK and got Driving License ready

We booked our tuktuk at Tuktukrental. Do we recommend it ? Hmm, it's quite hard for us to answer it.

Let me explain why.

At the beginning, we booked one tuktuk for 18 days. But then we changed it into 23 days BEFORE WE FLIED TO Sri Lanka .

As you can see on their website, they charge 20USD/day for 16-22 days and 18 USD for 23-28days.

At the end of the trip, they charged us 20USD for our first 18 days booking and 18USD for the other 5 days!

Oh and they didn't even pay all our deposit back with the weirdest reason!

They claimed that our tuktuk's tires were stolen and got changed into bad quality tires!

LIKE SERIOUSLY???!! We drove it every single day, and we always parked at our hostels' private parking lot!

At the returning tuktuk day, we chose to drop it at their partner hostel, we even stayed there from 12pm-09pm.

No one came to pick up/check our tuktuk. We even asked the staff if anyone would come check it and how they return deposit.

But nobody really knew anything.

After we back home, they sent the email about those bullshit.

We replied their email and asked for a proof, but they never answered back!

Well anyway, the trip itself was amazing.

Speaking of driving license, you can find information on tuktukrental website as well.

Long story short, no matter you're going to rent any types of transportation in Sri Lanka,

you should have your international license!

There are police officers EVERYWHERE!! And they love pull over foreign drivers !

003-verification-sign-sketchHotels, hostels, airBnB, blahblahblahblah

Booking.com! We found so many cool and cheap rooms on it.

Our average hostel price was 20USD. You can easily find something extremely cheap as well!

The cheapest one we had was even 5USD including breakfast in Udawalawe.

But it's quite hard to find rooms with air-conditioner in Sri Lanka ..

003-verification-sign-sketchWhat we eat generally in Sri Lanka ?

Luckily my husband and I are spicy food lovers! There're quite many cuisines in Sri Lanka that we loved!

Kottu- simple but yummy!

Devilled Chicken/Beef/Prawns/Calamari- the sauce is just on the point!!

Rotti with Banana and Chocolate/ cheese and egg- basically everything with rotti is tasty!

Street food -there're many different little snack you can find in little store, mostly are quite spicy.

Sri Lankan Curry- Mostly you'll have lots of different vegetables in the curry but not much meat.

Homemade dishes at hostels- we did have so many nice dinning experiences in our hostels! Book yourself a hostel with nice food review!

(We recommend Wilpattu House, the lady cooked us the most delicious meal we had in Sri Lanka!)

Fruits and Juices-it's not hard to notice that Sri Lanka is a kingdom of fruits! We loved their papayas, watermelons, mangos and bananas!

Also the orange king coconuts!

003-verification-sign-sketchDressing Code

Right before our trip, I was quite anxious about how to dress properly and respectfully but also won't kill myself from the heat.

-Firstly, you need your flipflop/sandals/slippers!

Even though we did bring our hiking shoes, mostly we just wore our slippers to everywhere, even hiking.

We only wore our hiking shoes twice when we climbed Pidurangala Rock in Sigiriya and the Adam's Peak!

-Cover your Shoulders and Knees when visit temples! Wearing white is a bonus!

In Buddhism, wearing white means pure. So you can see all locals are dressing white in temples.

Sadly we didn't know it in advance, now at least you know it!

If you just like to rock in shorts or miniskirts, you can easily buy a Sarong in cities.

It's quite a unique souvenir and it's also gender-free ! My husband got one and he loved it!

-Bikini's are beaches only!

On the south coast, there're full of beautiful beaches! But there're also lots of signs to remind you that you should wear more than

Bikini's once you leave the beach!

003-verification-sign-sketchWhat we've learned from this amazing adventure?

Peacocks can fly! - There are peacocks everywhere in Sri Lanka! You can even see them flying up to people's roofs or balconies!

Bring your own water bottle and shopping bag - You can't drink tap water! But you can try to ask for water from hostels.

The staff from supermarket always give lots of plastic bags, remember to say no and bring your own reusable bag or just use your hands!

Be a good traveler- Don't cut in line! Especially when we were stucked in the Adam's peak, waiting in lines to go on the top. We noticed there're so many tourists just cut in line or even use the side which is for people to go down. This is so upsetting to see tourists who even are from developed countries being this selfish and disrespectful for other human beings. Also when you luckily see sea turtles, please don't touch them! Just be a better person !!

Wild Elephants hate TUKTUK - haha, this one was funny. Our first time ran into a wild elephant on the side of road, we were so excited and can't wait to have the coolest photo and film of it, so both I and my husband were filming and slowly sliding by with our tuktuk. At the moment we passed by the elephant, she suddenly turned to face us and ran toward us!!

plantI'll update a video if I finally edit it.

003-verification-sign-sketch Last but not least! The Route !

As you can see on the first photo, all the yellow stars were the city we have stayed.

Colombo->Negombo->Wilpattu->Anuradhapura->Dambulla->Mahiyangana

->Numara Eliya ->Nallathanniya ->Ella ->Udawalawe

->Tangalle ->Galle -> Induruwa->Colombo

On the 2,3 photos were the hostels we slept in and the route we drove.
